Many of us have heard at least someone in our lives talking about THC or CBD or both, but what are they really? THC also known as tetrahydrocannabinol and CBD also known as cannabidiol are cannabis compounds that contain many benefits in many fields of study and work. Though the two compounds are often found working together, they have different functions in the body.
THC is a psychoactive compound, aka. where you get your high from. It also contains medical value. Some of its values are as follows; THC aids in pain relief, nausea and vomiting (did you know that there’s an FDA approved medicine that uses THC to help Cancer patients with their nausea called Marinol?), it helps treat PTSD, it is effective in treating insomnia, and so much more.
CBD is a non psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant, whereby its use will not cause any form of “high”. CBD is widely known however for its medicinal benefits. It has been known to help treat epilepsy, it is used as an anti-psychotic and can actually decrease your high if you consume too much THC. It is also used as an anxiety relief, and an antioxidant.
There are so many things we can learn about the cannabis plant, and much more research is needed. But fear not dear readers, as with legalization new opportunities for research are available.
Did you know that there are actually hundreds of compounds in the cannabis plant but the most research is on THC and CBD as they are the most common compounds found in the plant?
