Since Canada legalized recreational cannabis in October 2018 the Canadian-US border have exponentially increased the number of search and seizures.
Officials report that the number of seizures have increased over 100%, the amount is five times higher than it was in June 2018.
The officials reported that they “see a little bit of everything”, sometimes it’s just for personal use, enough for a couple of joints. Though they’ve seen edibles, seeds and larger amounts too. They have also seen big amounts of cannabis being mailed, in what they claim to be one to two pounds of dry herb at a time.
Authorities made 319 seizures of cannabis, they collected 62 kilograms between October 2017 and May 2018. In the same period, in 2019, after the legalization of recreational cannabis, authorities made 717 cannabis seizures, collecting a total of 346 kilograms of weed.
The officials revealed that there has been some creative intents of smuggling the sacred plant, like the case of an helicopter that dropped 108 pounds of cannabis in Grand Island, NY!
It is an illegal federal offence to try to cross the border with cannabis, this law is stated in the Cannabis Act. NY is in its way to legalize recreational Cannabis, but in the meantime, make sure that you keep your shake, cannabis products and by products at home when you are planning on having a road trip across the border.
